Jewelry Care

Jewelry Care Guide

Caring for your jewelry helps it stay beautiful for years to come. Below you'll find simple, effective care instructions for sterling silver, solid gold, platinum, and gemstone-set pieces.

Sterling Silver Care

Sterling silver naturally tarnishes over time, but with the right care it will remain bright and lustrous.

How to Care for Sterling Silver:

  • Store in an airtight bag or jewelry box to prevent tarnish
  • Keep away from lotions, perfumes, hairsprays, and cleaning chemicals
  • Wipe regularly with a soft microfiber or jewelry polishing cloth

At-Home Silver Cleaning (Baking Soda Method)

A gentle method to remove tarnish using items you likely have at home.

You'll Need:

  • Baking soda
  • Aluminum foil
  • Bowl
  • Hot water
  • Soft cloth

Steps:

  1. Line a bowl with aluminum foil, shiny side up
  2. Lay your silver jewelry on the foil
  3. Sprinkle baking soda generously over the pieces
  4. Pour hot (not boiling) water until jewelry is fully covered
  5. Let sit for 3–5 minutes as the tarnish transfers to the foil
  6. Rinse with cool water and dry with a soft cloth

Important: Do not use this method on silver jewelry containing soft or porous stones (opal, turquoise, pearl, amber, moonstone, etc.). Use a gentle wipe only.

Solid Gold Care (10K, 14K, 18K)

Gold does not tarnish, but it can collect oils, dirt, and residue over time.

How to Care for Solid Gold:

  • Store each piece separately to prevent scratches
  • Remove before showering, swimming, exercising, or applying lotions/perfume
  • Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing to remove oils and sweat

How to Clean Solid Gold:

  1. Mix warm water with a small amount of mild dish soap
  2. Soak for 10–15 minutes
  3. Gently brush with a soft toothbrush
  4. Rinse and pat dry with a soft cloth

Tip: A gold polishing cloth can restore a mirror-bright shine.

Platinum Care

Platinum is strong, hypoallergenic, and naturally white. Over time it may develop a soft patina, which many people love. It can also be polished back to a high shine.

How to Care for Platinum:

  • Store separately from other metals to avoid scratches
  • Remove during heavy-impact activities
  • Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing

How to Clean Platinum:

  1. Soak in warm water with mild dish soap
  2. Clean gently with a soft brush
  3. Rinse and dry thoroughly
  4. Professional polishing is recommended for a deeper shine

Gemstone Care

Gemstones vary in hardness and sensitivity. Proper care protects their clarity and brilliance.

Hard Gemstones (Diamond, Sapphire, Ruby, Moissanite)

  • Safe for mild soapy water and gentle brushing
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners for treated stones
  • Store separately to prevent scratching softer stones

Soft & Porous Gemstones (Opal, Pearl, Turquoise, Amber, Moonstone, Larimar, Lapis, Malachite)

  • Do not soak in water
  • Wipe gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth only
  • Keep away from chemicals, perfume, sunscreen, and soaps
  • Store in a soft pouch to prevent scratching and dehydration

Gemstone-Set Jewelry:

  • Clean the metal using the correct method for silver, gold, or platinum
  • Avoid baking-soda cleaning on gemstone pieces unless the stones are hard and non-porous
  • Check settings occasionally to ensure stones remain secure

General Jewelry Tips

  • Put jewelry on last — after lotions, perfumes, hair products, and sunscreen
  • Remove jewelry before sleeping, swimming, or exercising
  • Store pieces individually in soft pouches or lined boxes
  • Have your favorite pieces inspected and cleaned professionally once a year
